CHUALAR, Monterey County — October 29, 2026. Residents using Chualar Canyon Road have a county infrastructure plan that deserves separate attention from the resurfacing project on nearby Old Stage Road. Monterey County’s Chualar Canyon Road Bridge Replacements Project covers four bridges numbered 302, 303, 304 and 305 along the rural canyon road. The environmental study was circulated in February 2024.
Where are the four bridges?
According to the state filing, the crossings are approximately 1.8, 2.1, 2.7 and 2.8 miles east of the junction of Chualar Canyon Road and Old Stage Road. They are small, single-span structures, each roughly 15 feet long. County engineering documents say the original construction dates are unclear, but the structures were modified in the 1940s.
Why replace them?
Planning and inspection records raised concerns about capacity for heavy emergency vehicles. The project evaluated replacement with reinforced concrete box culverts, single-span slab bridges or a prefabricated arch system. The plan also addresses environmental protection near Chualar Creek, including erosion controls and temporary traffic detours during construction.
Has the project been completed?
The 2024 environmental record does not establish completion by October 2026. It documents a proposed project and environmental review, not the latest award, closure or inspection status. Motorists should ask Monterey County Public Works for the current construction schedule before relying on an old detour description.
How is this different from Old Stage Road work?
The Old Stage Road reconstruction involves an existing roadway from Iverson Road to Chualar Canyon Road. The bridge-replacement plan concerns four separate structures farther along Chualar Canyon Road. They may affect overlapping drivers, but the two projects have different engineering scopes and source documents.
